California LVN 30 Contact Hour CE Package

$29.99

LVN CE California means the 30 contact hours a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) completes every two years to renew an active license with the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT). Most LVNs complete the requirement through a single bundled package rather than buying courses one at a time.

- Definition

What Is LVN Continuing Education?

LVN continuing education is the ongoing coursework a Licensed Vocational Nurse completes to keep clinical knowledge current after initial licensure. California requires it as a condition of active license renewal, not as an optional credential. LVN continuing education covers clinical topics directly, including patient safety, chronic pain, infection control, and behavioral health, rather than general professional development.

Courses come in two common formats: online self-study, where an LVN works through material on their own schedule, and live formats, including in-person seminars or scheduled webinars. California places no limit on the number of hours an LVN completes through online, independent, or home study formats. An approved provider issues a certificate of completion for each course, which the LVN keeps as proof of the hours earned.

- Requirements

California LVN CE Requirements

Every LVN who holds an active California license needs Licensed Vocational Nurse Continuing Education California to renew that license, including hospital LVNs, clinic LVNs, and long-term care LVNs.

Governing Board

Which board regulates LVN CE?

The BVNPT approves LVN CE providers and sets the LVN renewal cycle, separately from the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). A course approved for RNs is not automatically valid for LVN renewal.

Provider Approval

What makes a course count?

A course counts toward LVN CE California only when it comes from a BVNPT-approved provider. Platinum Learning CE holds BVNPT Provider #15144.

Record Retention

How long to keep certificates?

An LVN keeps CE certificates for four years and produces them if the BVNPT selects the license for a random audit.

- Hours Required

How Many CEUs Do California LVNs Need?

“California LVNs need 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years.”

All 30 hours are elective topics chosen by the LVN, with one exception: a one-time, one-hour implicit bias course, required within the first two years after initial licensure, under AB 1407. An LVN completing their first renewal after initial licensure completes only the implicit bias hour, not the full 30-hour requirement; the full 30 hours begins at the second renewal.

- Format

Online LVN CE Courses

The California Nursing Practice Act uses continuing education to keep licensed professionals current on clinical competency, patient safety, and nursing ethics as evidence and standards evolve.

How the format works

A course opens on any device, a phone, tablet, or desktop browser, and saves progress automatically, so an LVN can start a module during a break and finish it after a shift. Most courses include a short knowledge check at the end rather than a timed exam, and a certificate generates the moment the course finishes.

Bundled package vs. individual courses

The BVNPT accepts CE from individual approved courses and from bundled packages built specifically for LVN renewal. A bundled package removes the step of selecting nine separate courses one at a time; an individual course suits an LVN who already has some hours completed and needs to fill a specific gap.

- Renewal

How to Renew Your California LVN License

Cycle

Every two years

The renewal cycle repeats every two years, tied to the last day of the LVN’s birth month. The BVNPT mails renewal notices roughly six weeks before the expiration date.

Attestation

Certify, don't submit

An LVN certifies, under penalty of perjury, that they completed 30 contact hours during the two years preceding renewal. Certificates aren’t submitted unless the BVNPT selects the license for audit.

If Hours Are Missing

Inactive, not delinquent

Paying the renewal fee without completed CE hours results in an inactive license, current but unable to practice. Not paying the fee within 30 days results in delinquent status instead.
