Who Needs Registered Nurse CE California?

Every Registered Nurse (RN) who holds an active California license needs RN CE California to renew that license. This includes hospital RNs, clinic RNs, school nurses, home health nurses, and RNs on inactive status preparing to reactivate. A nurse licensed within the past two years completes only the one-time implicit bias course for their first renewal. An out-of-state nurse who obtains a California license follows the same 30-hour cycle as any other California RN starting from their first renewal date.

How Many CE Hours Does an Registered Nurse Need in California?

California RNs need 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years. One contact hour equals at least 50 minutes of instruction in an organized learning activity, per California Code of Regulations, Title 16, Section 1450.

Two topics carry a mandated allocation inside the 30 hours:

Implicit bias training. A one-time, one-hour course, completed within the first two years after initial licensure, under Business and Professions Code Section 2811.5.
Gerontology training for qualifying nurse practitioners. Six of the 30 hours, in gerontology or dementia-related care, for nurse practitioners whose primary care patient population is 25 percent or more age 65 and older, effective January 1, 2025.

What Is the California RN License Renewal Cycle?

The California RN license renewal cycle repeats every two years, tied to the RN's birth month. The BRN opens the renewal application 90 days before the expiration date, inside the BreEZe online portal. An RN attests to completing 30 contact hours during that application; the BRN does not require certificates to be submitted at renewal. A license that lapses past the expiration date becomes delinquent, and the RN cannot practice in California until the license is reinstated.

Which CE Providers Does the BRN Approve?

The BRN approves CE providers that hold a CEP (Continuing Education Provider) number. Platinum Learning CE holds BRN Provider #17838. Record Retention

How Long Should an RN Keep CE Records?

An RN must keep CE certificates for four years. The BRN conducts random audits of RN continuing education compliance under Title 16, California Code of Regulations, Sections 1451(c) and (d). An RN selected for audit submits certificates covering the two-year cycle under review; an RN who cannot produce them risks a fine, probation, or denial of renewal under the Nurse Practice Act.

Upon completion of their training and obtaining one renewal of their licenses, RNs are required to complete 30 contact hours every two years prior to their license renewal.

Implicit Bias Course Requirement : Registered Nurses after their first two years of licensure are required to complete one hour of Implicit Bias training for their initial licensure renewal.
